A 100-acre estate with Italian and Japanese gardens, stone bridges, and a waterfall - the closest thing Richmond has to a fairy-tale backdrop. Best for engagements, anniversaries, and dressy family portraits. Tip: it's busy on weekends, so a weekday morning gives you the gardens nearly to yourself, with soft light filtering through the trees around 9am.

Bryan Park

Quieter than Maymont and underrated. The azalea gardens explode with color in spring, and the open meadows give kids room to roam - ideal for relaxed family sessions. Tip: the azaleas peak in April and May. That's the window to book if you want blooms in frame.

Belle Isle & the James River

Overcast days are secretly ideal too: soft, even light with no squinting. Spring (azaleas and roses) and fall (color along the river and the Fan) are the showpiece seasons, but Richmond photographs beautifully year-round.
